Moving and packing is a huge task, but it can become easier if you have the right moving supplies. Furthermore, it is important to protect your items with the right packing material in order to protect them from bumps, shocks and vibrations that would damage them. You also have to consider how to pack them to make sure they won’t shift and remain unaffected as they are carried around.  We’ve arranged this article to help you know what packing supplies you need to prepare when you are about to move.

Prepare the Moving Boxes

The first packing items you need are boxes for moving. Make sure you have the right packing boxes to pack your stuff. If you are hiring a moving company, then they would be able to provide. But if you are moving on your own, you have to consider your moving boxes carefully.

First and foremost, you can’t just use any type of cardboard boxes. Cheap, thin and low quality cardboard boxes would only endanger the safety of your stuff and might collapse when stacked. You need to consider the sizes as well – small and fragile items cannot be crammed inside large boxes. Also, consider what moving boxes are required, for example, appliances and electronics can’t be loaded inside thin boxes.

There are many types of boxes for moving and that would include:

  • Corrugated cartons – sturdy double-wall boxes suitable for breakables.
  • Divided boxes – partitioned moving boxes that can be used for separately storing breakables.
  • Cube cartons – boxes best for moving and storing larger and fragile items like appliances and electronic equipment.
  • Tea chest – double-strength and durable boxes that can be used to pack high-volume light items like clothing, bedding, pillows, toys and etc.
  • Book and wine boxes – smaller moving boxes suitable for small to medium items like books and cutlery.
  • Port-a-Robe – functional and well-structured box that can be used to organize and store clothing.
  • Archive boxes – durable and easy to stack boxes for moving, which is suitable for documents, files and records.
  • Flat packs – boxes ideal for items that should be stored horizontally like delicate garments and dresses.
  • Safe spot boxes – medium-sized moving boxes ideal for packing essential items and would ensure they won’t be lost during transit. They are last to be loaded and the first ones to be unloaded.
  • Picture cartons – are boxes suitable for moving and storing mirrors, paintings, frames and pictures.
  • Plastic bins – highly durable moving equipment that can be used for storage later on.

Provide Cushion

When you’re packing fragile items, you need to provide cushion, especially if the box if the box isn’t completely full.  So what should you use for padding? There are many padding materials you can try:

Bubble wrap – bubble wrap for moving is number 1 choice for providing cushion. It is a pliable and transparent plastic used for cushioning fragile items. It can be wrapped around items or compressed inside the box.

Packing peanuts – also known as loose fill is a packing material used to fill up the spaces inside packing boxes – taking up space between the items and the box to provide protection against shocks.

Paper – high grade paper, kraft paper, newsprint or even magazines can be wadded into the box or wrapped around your items. The cushioning they provide would depend on the quality or the kind of paper used.

Corrugated cardboard pads – paper-based pads used to provide cushion, lining, partition and stability to medium-sized fragile items like bottles, plates and glasses.

Foam wraps – very flexible protective packing material that can conform to any shape. This packing material provides excellent cushioning, protection and shock absorption.

Clothing and linen – clothing, linen, blankets, comforters, pillows and stuff toys can be used as cushion to your items. They are perfect replacements for cushioning materials, especially if you are short on money to buy them.

Grab Some Blankets

One of the most important packing supplies for moving is moving blankets. Moving blankets are thick blankets often used to large pieces of furniture. Often times, they are included in the service when you hire a moving company. If it is not included or if you are moving by yourself, then you can rent some. Moving blankets are crucial during the moving day. Furniture would get scratched and more items would get broken because there’s not enough bedding to provide cushion and protection.

Stock Up on Tape

Tapes are important packing supplies for moving, so be sure to stock up on them days before you move. There are different tapes you can use – shipping tapes for sealing boxes, masking tape for labeling and duct tapes for reinforcing heavy boxes or for other heavy duty purposes. Have at least 2 rolls of each tape to make sure you won’t run out during the process. Of course, cutting tools are also tools you need to have when you move.

Ready your Work Tools

Common work tools like screwdrivers, hammers, drills, pliers and wrenches should be at hand when you move. These tools may be needed to adjust or configure your furniture. They will come in handy when moving large items through a small door or window. They can be used to disassemble and reassemble furniture or unhinging the doors to create a larger opening.

Lifting Tools

Most of us are not built for lifting stuff. Bending and lifting is exhausting and can lead to serious injuries. If you move with a moving company, they would bring dollies and other necessary moving equipment necessary to lift heavy boxes and furniture pieces. If not, then you and your family or friends are left on your own to do the heavy lifting. Fortunately, there are many lifting straps and moving harness that can literally take off the weight.  You can borrow or rent moving harnesses, dollies and various lifting straps.
